False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the bacteria Brucella abortus,the species causing brucellosis in cattle & humans. Individual bacterium are Gram-negative,spherical or rod-shaped. B. abortus is unable to establish itself in immature animals,but invades the udder & uterus in cows & the testis in bulls. Symptoms include sickness,loss of appetite & general weakness,leading to chronic fever & swelling of lymph nodes. Transmission to man occurs through direct contact with an infected animal (goats,pigs & sheep are also affected) or through drinking contaminated milk. Magnification: X 10,000 at 35mm size | |
