Proteus bacteria. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a colony of bacteria,Proteus sp. Individual bacteria are rod-shaped,Gram- negative, highly motile (possessing tail-like flagella for movement) and are found in the intestines and in decaying organic matter. Proteus sp. is not generally considered to be pathogenic, although enterotoxins produced when the bacteria is ingested in large numbers may causes acute gastro-enteritis. Species associated with disease in man are P. morganii (causing acute enteritis in infants) & P. vulgaris (urinary tract infections). Magnification: X 3,500 at 35mm size | |
