False colour transmission electron micrograph of Borrelia sp (gram negative) a genus of bacteria related to the spirochaete family. Certain species of Borrelia are pathogenic causing relapsing fever in humans. This infectious disease,occurring in West Africa,North America & Europe is transmitted by ticks & lice. The bacteria are contained within the body fluids of the lice,which enter the human body through scratches or wounds. The result is recurrent fever. B. vincentii is associated with Vincent's angina (trench mouth),chronic ulceration of the gums,tongue,cheeks & tonsils. It is treated with antibiotics. Mag: X 38,200 (at 35mm size) | |
