Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Light micrograph of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, bacteria responsible for gonorrhoeae. The sexually-transmitted disease occurs when colonies of the small,kidney-shaped bacterium infect the mucous membranes of the urethra; symptoms include pain on passing water & a discharge of pus (some infected women, however, experience no symptoms). Untreated, gonorrhoeae may cause sterility in women; severe inflammation of the penile urethra may prevent the passage of urine. Further complications include inflammation of heart valves (endocarditis),conjunctivitis of the eye,and arthritis. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification: x530 at 35mm size | |
