Supercomputer simulation of electron distribution in a single molecule of Buckminsterfullerene (C60) at 1000 K. The colours gold, purple & pink denote regions of increasingly greater electron density. In background, the atomic structure appears as 5- and 6-membered carbon rings arranged in the shape of a soccer ball. C60 was first postulated by Kroto et al in 1985. Intensive research has revealed a family of fullerenes of various shapes & sizes. Simulation & image: J. Bernholc,Q. -M. Zhang,J. -Y. Yi,C. Brabec,NC State University; T.
