Asbestos. Polarised light micrograph of chrysolite,a fibrous variety of asbestos. Chrysolite is a semi-hard,light material formed of hydrous magnesium silicate. Its fibrous nature means that it may be spun and woven into textiles. These have many uses, mainly in thermal insulation and fireproofing. Asbestos is being increasingly replaced by other fibrous materials. Inhalation of certain types of asbestos may lead to asbestosis,a lung disease which is frequently fatal. This sample came from the Ural mountains in Russia. Magnification x19 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x32 at 5x4 inch size | |
