Light micrograph of some fibres of asbestos (an amphibole mineral). The most common varieties of asbestos are crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile. The fibres can be compressed, felted or woven to make insulating boards, paper and shingles. It is widely used in the construction, chemical and process industries because of its fireproof and insulating properties and its superior corrosion resistance. If the smaller fibres are inhaled in quantity, they lodge in the lung causing the respiratory disease asbestosis. Magnification: x160 at 6x4.5cm size | |
