Iron pentacarbonyl. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of iron pentacarbonyl powder (Fe.C5.O5). Iron pentacarbonyl is an intermediate in the purification of iron. Iron ore is first reacted with carbon monoxide to produce the carbonyl complex. The complex is then reduced to pure iron. Iron pentacarbonyl is also an extremely good flame retardant. However,it is highly toxic and should not be handled out of a controlled environment. Magnification: x1968 at 5x7cm size
