Morphine. Molecular graphic of morphine,a pain- killing (analgesic) drug. It is an addictive alka- loid derived from opium. Morphine contains carbon (yellow,C),hydrogen (blue,H),oxygen (red,O) & nitrogen (not seen here,N). It has the chemical formula C17H19NO3. Morphine has a similar struct- ure to the body's own opiate painkillers,known as endorphins or enkephalins,and occupies the same nerve receptor sites. The use of morphine brings a feeling of pleasure and euphoria. However,the body develops tolerance quickly and more drug is needed to achieve the same effect.
