dUTPase enzyme. Molecular model of the enzyme dUTP pyrophosphatase (dUTPase) from the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). This virus causes a disease commonly known as feline AIDS,and it is closely related to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS in humans. dUPTase is required for correct formation of DNA. FIV,like HIV,is a retrovirus,an RNA virus that replicates itself through a DNA intermediate. dUTPase prevents the RNA base uracil from being incorporated into the DNA created by the retrovirus. Like HIV,FIV attacks the immune system of cats, and is spread by scratches, bites and sexual contact. It is incurable, but affected cats can live a nearly normal life with medical treatment | |
