Tartaric acid crystals. Polarised light micrograph (PLM) of crystals of tartaric acid (dihydroxysuccinic acid). Tartaric acid is abundant in grapes. During wine making it becomes tartaric salt which can form crystals. Tartaric acid is mainly used for the manufacture of fizzy drinks. It has also been used in baking, known as "cream of tartar",a component of baking powder. It is also used in medicines,dye-making,silvering of mirrors, food flavourings and photography. Also tartaric acid derivatives can be used as mild laxatives. Magnification: unknown | |
