Polarised light micrograph of crystals of ammonium sulphate, mag. X 25. A white, crystalline solid, ammonium sulphate is produced in large quantities in industrial processes, often as a product of neutralisation operations on sulphuric acid. It is also produced in coke-oven operations, where the ammonia gas given off is neutralised with sulphuric acid, giving ammonium sulphate. Its major use is as a fertiliser, adding sulphur and nitrogen to the soil: it is also used in dry cell batteries,as a soldering liquid,& as a flame retardant for fabrics | |
