Haloalkane test. Image 3 of 7. Adding silver nitrate to test tubes containing haloalkane and sodium hydroxide to determine the halogen present. Haloalkanes are formed when a member of the halogen group of elements is substituted into an alkane. The alkane and sodium hydroxide solutions have already been heated to remove the halogen from the alkane, and had dilute nitric acid added to remove a hydroxyl group from the halogen. The silver nitrate reacts with the halogen to produce a precipitate, the colour of which depends on the halogen ion present. For a sequence showing the test see images A500/537 to A500/543 | |
