Detecting an alkali. Pipette that has been used to add sodium oxide (Na2O) to water (H2O) containing universal indicator. Universal indicator is used to indicate acidity or alkalinity. It has turned from green (neutral) to purple, indicating that an alkaline solution has formed. This evidence helps work out the chemistry taking place. The product of the reaction is sodium hydroxide (NaOH),which forms an alkaline solution in water. The equation for the reaction is: Na2O + H2O ----> 2 NaOH | |
