Lithium reacting with water. Lithium (Li) is a highly reactive metallic element that floats on water and reacts with it. This exothermic (heat- producing) reaction forms lithium hydroxide (LiOH) and hydrogen gas (H2). Lithium is stored under oil to prevent it reacting in this way with water in the atmosphere. The reaction equation is: 2Li + 2H2O ----> 2LiOH + H2 | |
