Silver mirror test for the presence of aldehydes. A sample which is suspected of containing aldehydes is placed in a test tube, and ammoniacal silver nitrate solution is added. The test tube is then placed in a water bath to be heated. If aldehydes are present, they reduce the silver ions in solution to form silver metal which forms a deposit on the inside of the tube. The result is this 'silver mirror' effect. This test may be particularly useful in differentiating between aldehydes and the closely- related ketones | |
