High temperature superconductor. Molecular model of part of the high temperature superconductor,123-YBCO or 1-2-3. The name is due to the ratio of metals in it (chemical formula: Y. Ba2. Cu3. O7). Superconductors transmit electrical current with no electrical resistance and therefore no energy loss. YBCO stands for the elements yttrium (Y),barium (B),copper (C) and oxygen (O) which form 1-2-3. Atoms are colour-coded: yttrium (purple),oxygen (red),barium (yellow) and copper (blue). Superconductors which work at a relatively warm 30 Kelvin (-243 degrees celsius) were first created in 1986.
