Refraction. Refraction of an image of a ruler in transparent liquid. The image of the ruler has been displaced from that suggested by the ruler's position. This is due to the refractive power of the liquid. Light travels at different velocities in different media, and as a light ray passes from one medium to another it appears to bend. As light travels more slowly in liquid than in air,the image of the rod below the surface has been 'bent' away from its true position. The reflection of the ruler can also be seen at lower left | |
