Calcium islands. Coloured atomic force micrograph (AFM) of calcium islands (light blue dots) on the surface of a calcium fluoride crystal. The islands were made using electrons from a very hot filament. The electrons eject the fluorine from the surface of the crystal. The remaining calcium atoms join into these 20 nanometre-wide islands. The sample was scanned by moving a spring-loaded "stylus" over it. Magnification unknown | |
