High-energy collision of a sulphur ion with the nucleus of a gold atom. In this electronic display from the NA35 experiment at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva,a sulphur ion has come in from the left & collided with an atomic nucleus in a target of gold to produce a spray of subatomic particles. The sulphur ion had been accelerated to an energy of 6.4 TeV (6.4 tera-electronvolts or 6400 GeV) in CERN's Super-Proton-Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator. This example of heavy-ion research was recorded in 1991 | |
