Electronic display of a 2-jet event in the CDF,the Collider Detector at Fermilab, the particle physics laboratory near Chicago. The display at right shows a section through the CDF's central tracking chambers & drift tubes. A proton & antiproton, accelerated in Fermilab's Tevatron collider, have annihilated in the centre. Their energy materialises as a number of particles, including a quark & an antiquark. These quarks are not seen themselves, but produce two oppositely directed jets (top & bottom) of other particles. The two jets are each about 100 GeV in transverse energy. The image at left shows a detail of one of the jets | |
