Computer display of the aftermath of one of the first proton-antiproton collisions in the Collider Detector Facility (CDF) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago,in October 1985. The total collision energy of 1600 GeV (1. 6 TeV) was a world record at the time. The display shows a side view of the 2 halves of the detector's innermost tracking chamber, with the gap between representing the beam pipe. A proton & antiproton have met & annihilated at the point marked by the purple cross, their energy remater- ialising as the spray of charged particles whose tracks shoot out through the chamber | |
