Electronic display of a typical "three jet" event (also sometimes known as a Mercedes Benz event because of similarity to Mercedes Benz symbol) in the High Resolution Spectrometer (HRS) detector at the PEP electron/positron collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC),California. The display shows a representation of the cylindrical detector seen end-on. An electron & positron have collided at the centre of the display, mutually annihilating into pure energy which rematerialises as a quark,an antiquark and a gluon. These part- icles live too briefly to be visible, but their presence can be deduced from the three jets of other particles into which they immediately decay. (Run 2436,Event 16362) (June '84) | |
