The first observation of the formation & disinteg- ration of a "hypernucleus" - a nucleus in which a neutron is replaced by a lambda particle. The picture was recorded in photographic emulsion in 1953 by Polish physicists Marian Danysz & Jerzy Pniewski. The hypernucleus is created in the particle collision at A & disintegrates at B as a result of the decay of the unstable lambda. The lambda is a neutral member of the family of "strange" particles, which contain a strange quark | |
