Antimatter annihilation event. Computer model of an annihilation event caused by a collision between matter and antimatter. This is evidence for the first large-scale production of cold antimatter,in the form of atoms of antihydrogen. These annihilate when they come into contact with normal matter. Two annihilation events occur: the red lines are photons released in opposite directions by the positron; the yellow lines are tracks of particles produced by the anti-proton. The shared origin of the sets shows that the antiproton and positron were bound as an anti-atom of antihydrogen. This work was done in the ATHENA experiment at CERN,in Geneva,Switzerland | |
