CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector, computer model. This is a detector at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider),at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva,Switzerland. It is being built around part of the LHC,a 27-kilometre-long underground ring. Proton beams will be accelerated by the LHC to pass along the axis of the cylinder and collide head-on. The collision energy will create new particles that will decay into other particles. These will be detected by layers that include an electromagnetic calorimeter (orange),a hadron calorimeter (blue) and muon detector layers (red). The CMS will be 22 metres long & 15 metres wide. The LHC should start operating in 2007 | |
