ALICE detector, computer model. ALICE is "A Large Ion Collider Experiment" for the LHC (Large Hadron Collider),at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva,Switzerland. It is shown surrounding part of the LHC,a 27-kilometre-long underground ring that will accelerate ion beams to collide head-on. The collision energy will create new particles that will decay into products that will be detected. The detectors include a detector for muons (cone-shaped),a time projection chamber (grey) for longer-lived particles,a calorimeter (green),a photon spectrometer (red, above people) and a high-momentum detector (blue, upper centre). The LHC should start operating in 2007 | |
