View of the tunnel of the PEP accelerator at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC),Calif- ornia. PEP stands for Positron Electron Project,& it accelerates positrons & electrons up to energies of 15 billion electron volts (15 GeV). The particles are accelerated in opposite direct- ions in the same beam tube & collide at six interaction regions. PEP was completed in 1979 & has a circumference of 1. 5 miles. The photo shows two of PEP's long, red, dipole, bending magnets & one of its square, blue, quadrupole focusing magnets | |
