A scientist works on part of the DESY III particle accelerator at DESY,the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg. Built in 1987,DESY III is a proton synchrotron machine 317 metres in circumference. It takes 50 MeV hydrogen ions from a linear accelerator, strips them of their electrons to produce protons,& accelerates the protons to an energy of 7. 5 GeV. The protons are then injected into the PETRA accelerator where their energy is boosted further before they are finally injected into HERA,the giant new DESY accelerator which will collide protons with electrons | |
