Part of the tunnel for the LEP (Large Electron- Positron) collider at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. The photograph was taken in 1987 before installation of the collider's magnet ring. With a circumference of 27 kilometres, part of it running under the Jura mountains,LEP will be the largest scientific instrument ever built when it is completed. It will accelerate beams of electrons & positrons up to an energy of 100 GeV per beam & then collide them; the results of the collisions will be studied by 4 major detectors - known as ALEPH,DELPHI,L3,& OPAL - arranged around the ring | |
