View of the linear accelerator or linac at the Brookhaven National Laboratory,Long Island,New York,in 1962. The linac received protons from a Cockroft- Walton generator & accelerated them to an energy of 50 MeV before injecting them into Brookhaven's major accelerator, the AGS (Alternating Gradient Synchrotron). The AGS,which started operations in 1960,then accelerated them up to 25 GeV. Although the AGS is still working, this linac has been replaced by a more powerful version | |
