The Gran Sasso massif,Italy, under which lies the world's largest underground laboratory for the study of subatomic particles from astrophysical sources. The main experiments involve detection of solar neutrinos,high-energy particles in the cosmic rays and magnetic monopoles. The laboratory is formed by three galleries which are situated under 1400m of rock. This provides a shield, equivalent to 3500m of water, which stops the low- energy particles in the cosmic rays. The rock has also a very low-level of natural radioactivity which provides a perfect environment for this research | |
