Diamond Light Source Facility. This synchrotron (a type of particle accelerator) is the largest UK-funded facility to be built in England for 40 years. It can potentially host up to 40 experimental stations, called beamlines, which use beams of radiation to analyse the structure and properties of complex molecules such as proteins. The building has a characteristic ring-like structure,at the heart of which is a huge circular vacuum chamber where the beam experiments take place. This facility became fully operational in January 2007 | |
