Animation shows an Earth drained of water and stripped of vegetation revealing its cracked shell, or lithosphere, which is composed of more than a dozen tectonic plates. Magma in the mantle can be seen between gaps in the plates in this depiction. In this animation, the plates expand outward revealing more and more of the mantle below. Plate tectonics is the central mechanism behind the theory of continental drift. The Earth's surface is depicted in earth tones based on grayscales obtained from satellite imagery. | |
