Sandstone Zebra atomic test, 1948. Nuclear test operatives setting and triggering the timers and controls for an atom bomb test. This is the Zebra test of 14 May 1948, that took place as part of Operation Sandstone. These tests took place at Enewetak Atoll in the Pacific, and were carried out by the US Atomic Energy Commission, with the military only having a supporting role. The final test (Zebra) was an immense success, leading to the design being put into production as the Mark 4 nuclear bomb.
