DNA analysis using electrophoresis. Electrophoresis gel being loaded with samples during DNA testing. An electric field is applied to the gel to separate the sample components. The resulting banding can be used to identify and analyse the genetic sequence. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic material that controls the growth and development of living organisms. DNA testing involves amplifying the DNA in a sample and identifying the genetic sequence. This information can be used in medicine to test for inherited (genetic) diseases. It can also be used to determine parentage. Samples from a crime scene can be tested to identify potential suspects in a technique known as DNA fingerprinting or DNA profiling. Filmed in 1990 | |
