Massive sandstone formations hundreds of metres high in Sedona, Arizona, USA. The deep red color for which this area is known is due to the presence of iron oxide (rust) which stains the sandstone. The formations consist of relatively soft rock capped by harder less easily eroded stone that protects the rock beneath it. | |
