Bark has been pried away from ash tree in Toronto, Canada to reveal damage caused by emerald ash borer (Agrilus planiplennnis) larvae. The ash borer is an invasive beetle that has killed tens of millions of ash trees in North America since it was first detected in 2002. The female lays her eggs in the bark of ash trees and the larvae which hatch burrow through to feed on the sapwood beneath, leading to the tree s death. | |
