A malignant tumor is shown in blue and can be seen in context with the heart, lungs, and part of the skeletal system. Respiratory gating is a method of radiation therapy in which the patient is thoroughly monitored while breathing so that the tumor's movement in response to each breath can be recorded. The radiation will target the tumor only while it is in a specific position. Once the patient breathes and the tumor moves out of that position, the radiation beam will stop. This is to avoid hitting surrounding tissue with the radiation beam.
