Steam and other gases spew from a volcanic vent near Hverir in central Iceland. This is one of many geothermally active regions in the country. This geothermal energy is tapped and supplies a significant amount of the nation's primary energy. Iceland is geologically active as it straddles two continental plates, with the Eurasian Plate to the east and the North American Plate to the west, separated by the spreading mid-Atlantic Ridge. | |
