Alan Shepard (with the Mission Commander's red stripes on his arms and legs) unfurls the American flag and the top of the pole as Edgar Mitchell (closer to the camera) goes over to join him. Mitchell starts to hammer the lower part of the flag pole into the ground so that Alan Shepard can place the upper flag pole in it. Mitchell comes back towards the camera to place the hammer back in the MET (Mobile Equipment Transporter) a two-wheeled trolley that the explorers dragged behind them to carry tools, instruments and samples). The shadow of the MET can be seen on the left of the frame. Edgar takes pictures of Alan and then they swap places to take more pictures before both astronauts come over towards the camera to stop the film - giving a good clear view of their suits, and life support system connectors. Another prominent shadow in the scene is cast by the unfurled communications dish on the right. Date recorded: 1971-02-05 | |
