Light microscope footage of two Nematodes of undetermined genus taken from a soil habitat, showing the typical movement of these organisms. A handful of soil will contain thousands of the microscopic worms, many of them parasites of insects, plants or animals. Nematodes are the most numerous multicellular animals on earth. Free-living species are abundant, including nematodes that feed on bacteria, fungi, and other nematodes. Among the nearly 20.000 described species there are about 100 species that can cause considerable damages on cultivated plants. The beet cyst nematode Heterodera schachtii has the most economic importance. Microscopic contrast method used: differential interference contrast. Captured field width: 1 mm | |
