Quasar halo. 3D animation of the gas halo surrounding a distant quasar. The data for this animation was obtained by the MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) instrument on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). This was one of 19 quasars studied by the researchers using the MUSE instrument. Quasars, objects observed in the early universe, contain supermassive black holes in their centres, which consume stars, gas, and other material at an extremely high rate.
