Flight to the planet Proxima b, which orbits the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri. Proxima Centauri is the closest star to our Sun, lying just 4.25 light years away. The discovery of Proxima b was announced on 24th August 2016. The planet orbits its star every 11.2 days, at a distance of just seven million kilometres. Despite this proximity, just a twentieth of the Earth-Sun distance, the planet is in the range of distances that means its surface could contain liquid water (the so-called habitable zone). This is because Proxima Centauri is very much less powerful than the Sun, 600 times less luminous and with a temperature of some 3000 Kelvin rather than our Sun's 5772 K. | |
