Animation showing the composition of natural gas, a common fossil fuel. A gas container opens to show the molecules within. Natural gas varies in composition depending on the location from which it is extracted, but it is primarily methane (CH4). There are much smaller amounts of higher hydrocarbons, including ethane, propane, butanes, pentanes and hexanes. It may also include other impurities. Natural gas burned as fuel has many of these removed. | |
