Interior of the Earth. Animation showing the interior layers of the Earth, with information at right on the composition and size of each successive layer. The Earth is 12, 742 kilometres across, with a radius of 6371 kilometres. The first layer is the crust, with a depth of 5 to 40 kilometres. The crust is mostly silicate rocks (oxygen and silicon), with aluminium and iron and other elements. The temperature rises with depth to 800 Kelvin at the crust-mantle boundary. The mantle is 2900 kilometres thick, with temperatures rising to 3000 Kelvin. It consists of sold and semi-molten rock. The main elements are silicon, magnesium, oxygen and iron. The outer core here is a liquid layer around 2250 kilometres thick. It consists of iron and another element (possibly nickel). Temperatures range from 3000-5000 Kelvin. The inner core here is a solid sphere of iron and another element (possibly nickel). It has a radius of 1220 kilometres (a diameter of 2440 kilometres). The temperature continues to rise, peaking at 7000 Kelvin at the centre of the Earth.
