Collision theory of chemical reactions. Animation showing how chemical reactions can be explained using collision theory as applied to molecules colliding and reacting. The animation shows reactant molecules (blue) moving due to their kinetic energy, as in a liquid or a gas. The animation zooms in to show two reactant molecules colliding and reacting to form product molecules (purple). The animation then zooms out to show that all the other molecules have reacted to form the product molecules. Other considerations in collision theory include concentration, activation energy, and catalysts, all of which increase the reaction rate. Collision theory is closely related to reaction kinetics.
