Coloured scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the surface of a trap from a venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula), a carnivorous plant. The traps are modified leaves, which have at attractive smell and colour to insects. The inside surfaces bear three sensory hairs, of which one is seen here. When these are triggered by an insect the trap snaps shut, sealing the insect within. Digestive glands (red) then release enzymes that break down the insect into nutrients for the plant. | |
