Active solar areas. Time-lapse Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) ultraviolet footage of a series of active regions interacting with each other in the upper regions of the Sun. The magnetically intense active regions produce coils of arcing loops, some of which connect with neighbouring active region, some of which erupt in coronal mass ejections. The SDO is an Earth-orbiting spacecraft launched in 2010 by NASA and used to observe the Sun. Here, the Sun is seen at a wavelength of 171 angstroms (extreme ultraviolet). This footage was obtained in the period 28 September to 2 October 2011. | |
