Active solar areas. Time-lapse Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) ultraviolet footage of a series of active regions interacting with each other in the upper regions of the Sun. Sometimes the magnetic field comes up into the corona from the lower regions and loops back down into the Sun. The SDO is an Earth-orbiting spacecraft launched in 2010 by NASA and used to observe the Sun. Here, the Sun is seen at a wavelength of 171 angstroms (extreme ultraviolet). This footage was obtained in the period 22-24 September 2012. | |
